Eviland LaLanne was a practicing priest, herbalist and flag-maker. His drapo were used in the opening ceremonies at the vodou sanctuary at which participants would become 'possessed' by the particular deity depicted on the banner. The ancestral gods, or Iwa, would then speak to the faithful through these proxies, curing, healing or chastising. LaLanne's work is based on traditional vodou iconography but with a raw edge that sets his work apart from many other flag-makers. Many of his flags depict Lasirene, the siren or mermaid who can be invoked both for good luck or to lure people to a watery death.
